Modern Japanese Restaurant
Oita Soho was designed to create a sophisticated, relaxing space with Japanese influences and carrying some of the identity established in Oita’s first restaurant, informal and verdant with plants throughout. The space required more than the conventional approaches of minimalistic modern Japanese design to deliver a distinct, remarkable experience that is a synthesis of aesthetic and cultural elements. The work was inspired by the Tanizaki essay "In Praise of Shadows" which discusses the use, meaning and aesthetics of darkness and shadows in Japanese art, design and architecture.

All Day Dining Restaurant
The space is designed to offer a dynamic, open dining experience with a welcoming atmosphere. It features a bar, three dining zones, and two private rooms. The design embodies a smart casual aesthetic, with calming navy ceilings that unify the space, complemented by low materials and abundant greenery. Three skylights allow natural light to flood the venue, enhancing the openness and highlighting the feature ceiling in each area, creating a sophisticated yet comfortable environment for guests.

Restaurant
The design was to create a space that would touch customers by reflecting and enhancing the experience of Hot Stone’s passionately artistic food. The dining area is dressed with natural oak throughout, mirrored wooden panels - while the circular elements are inspired by the Japanese tradition of moon viewing. The main wall features a Hokusai’s Ukiyo-e print Peonies And Butterfly. The over-bar frame is formed of timber cross-joint carpentry with cylindrical paper lanterns are hung within this frame, highlighting the geometry of the structure and playing with shadows and mood.
